I think she tried as best she could to love me but now as an adult and a mother hearing this from her I finally understood that she felt trapped by being forced into a pregnancy she clearly didn’t want and it must have been so hard for her to feel maternal towards me. My dad on the other hand must have felt he needed to be all things to me and he succeeded. Times were different 51 years ago and she definitely didn’t consider what he did as “Rape” but I think she did feel it was very wrong and a betrayal so it also caused some issues in their marriage. We did grow a bit closer as I grew up and moved out but we were never extremely close.

Another strange tale from the arctic regions: Many years ago my dad was working on an engineering project in Kangerlussuaq - the location of Greenland's biggest airport. Same. Although I didn’t get to do much gaming during my treatments... my chemo and immunotherapy regimen required Benadryl so I slept during a good portion of my treatment time. I guess it’s just not something that I ever really thought about before, but it’s really cool to know there are so many other people out there like myself that have gone through this and bond over gaming. If I remember correctly it’s a reference to the founding myth of Rome. There’s a response where the wishes say “kill it” or something to that effect. The right answer is “thanks” it recalls the mother wolf who keeps her child safe with her mouth.
