 The impact of pets on the meat industry is infinitesimally small in comparison to the impact of humans. Most pet food is derived from "waste" material left over from making human food (not saying this is healthy, but it's true). If humans ate no meat at all (not causing harm to any animals), there would be a vastly reduced number of farmed animals - we wouldn't be breeding them for meat excepting said pet food, only byproducts like milk and eggs if eggs fit into the no-harm philosophy. So yes, unnaturally bred/alive animals do die to be eaten by unnaturally bred/alive animals, but the real problem here is the people. Home:  Shiftytee

 I understand where you are coming from, but I think that there's a bigger picture to look at. And I personally believe that when you adopt (not shop!) a cat or dog, and SPAY/NEUTER it, you are ultimately saving a) that animal's life, and b) more future babies that would just contribute to the overpopulation. There is an overpopulation of pets - dogs and cats specifically - due to the behavior of people and breeders. I'm not sure how it is around the world, but the number of homeless animals is definitely decreasing in the US.   I mis-marketed myself. I am vegetarian, by Hindu beliefs, and do not eat eggs because I believe they count in the meat realm. However, I believe in the ethical receiving and consumption of animal goods, such as honey and milk. Plus... rehoming the cat would not mean any fewer animals would be killed to feed the cat. The cat already exists and has the best home it can, being fed already reputable brands. If you rehome the cat, there are chances it's new owner will not feed it as reputable brands. Like I can understand not getting another animal because you're vegan, but sorry it's too fucking late to object when you already have a pet.  Well if she wants to mail again, I’d use a food saver to seal things, and dry ice (you could seal this too), it’s a wonderful gesture, UPS always screws up my packages too.  Call their customer service line, voice your frustration, be polite, but be firm in your demand for a refund and to escalate to their manager. You will probably have to call several times, and each time escalates to through 2-3 service reps and managers. The bars are mostly serving token amounts of food so they can stay open. They're exploiting a loophole to be classified as bar-restaurants rather than bars. This being said, the government is doing such a shitty job of income protection, especially for small businesses like bars, that I feel like many of them are in Sophie's Choice.  I work in a brewery in PA, the new restrictions are crazy. We sell popcorn and small plates but that’s not considered a “meal”, IDK how this restaurant is getting away with the solo onion ring when we have to make people buy an entire meal for every person in their party just to get a beer. California said that appetizers, side salads, pretzels, 'bar food', and a single cup of soup do not count as a meal for beer consumption as well.  Well, the issue is that bars are the places where COVID spreads the fastest. Get drunk, stop caring about social distancing, next week you or your family is coughing up a lung or in the hospital. The original idea for the law was to keep bars closed.  It’s not that hard to understand. People need to eat, the idea is that people eating aren’t getting drunk and then ignoring all social distancing rules. And this way businesses could start coming partially back at least instead of tanking tons of small businesses completely.  I think it has more to do with the types of places. It is hard to create laws for an entire state that covers every situation. Places that serve food generally have people sitting at tables with relatively good spacing. Places that don't serve food are often clubs where people are dancing on top of each other. That's exactly it, and for breweries, it's a huge kick in the groin.  I think the idea was more about necessity. If you're out to eat or picking up food then getting some drinks is fine but the current structure is to prevent people from just going to bars to drink. Beer and liquor must be sold at separate stores. Only beer can be sold at grocery stores, no liquor. Liquor stores must be closed on Sundays. You can't have alcohol shipped to your house. You have to be a certain distance from a church to sell mixed drinks (but beer is okay?? This was from a friend that ran a bar near a church lol).  Blame Gov. Gifford Pinchot who was a member of the temperance movement and was in power when prohibition was repealed. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board was created to: "discourage the purchase of alcoholic beverages by making it as inconvenient and expensive as possible ". The PLCB has come a long way since then.  You can pay for food at the beer registers though, at least in the store I worked at (an Acme, funnily enough). You can also drink at the seating area, though there are going to rule in place so that you don't treat it like a bar. A few do just have legit bars though.  The liquor control board is allowing grocery stores to exploit a loophole in its own rules. There needs to be a separate area with separate registers that serve hot food and has seating for 30 people. Then, that area can get licensed as a restaurant even if it's inside the grocery store. Then under that restaurant's license, it can stock beer and sometimes wine. Customers are limited to 16 12oz beers and four bottles of wine in a single transaction. We have a bunch of craft distilleries in the area now and they saved my ass when the state stores were closed down. I can finally buy beer at Acme while I’m picking up some stuff for dinner so I guess it’s a step in the right direction. In California, one can go to the grocery store and buy any alcohol, the same as "liquor stores" which are just corner stores that also sell alcohol. Moving from California to Pennsylvania was weird learning how they handle alcohol sales. When I was 21 I transferred universities to a new state (they had a masters program I wanted to be in eventually), that state was very strict regarding alcohol. I was used to being able to buy any type of alcohol in grocery stores, Walmarts, etc. My home state you could buy alcohol anywhere.  We wouldn't be the only people in the store doing this there were multiple times when at least one other person had been on the curb waiting to complete all their purchases... Then when we were done we would load up our car and drive home with all our beer. So weird.  Some of that has changed. We're making small steps. Cases and six-packs can now be sold in the same establishments. Places can now sell wine and liquor and beer in the same shot depending on the license type. Although places with certain licenses, namely place like gas stations and grocery stores, still have a limit of 192 oz. per transaction. Down at our place, we can serve wine and mead and cider alongside our beer, but if it's something that we don't make (the wine, mead, and a few gluten-free guest taps), we can't sell it to go. Absolutely.  Of course, what they missed in the law was any notion of how you would force someone to eat. You can't. And nightclub owners on legal advice were told that once they provided a meal, they were covered. Nobody has to buy a meal from you, and not everyone has to have one.  Our college had the same sort of rule so once a month the Student Gov Association would throw a “free food” night at the pub, where they had everyone come in and put their food on the SGA tab to hit the 40% for the month. You are only allowed to have a Smoking area in a restaurant if you have a Non-Smoking area with different ventilation and walls that aren't tied into the Smoking Area what so ever. What a lot of the old-time smoking bars did was make their Vestibule area the Non Smoking area with a tiny table and 2 chairs.  The state where I live is like this. I don’t know exactly how they enforce, but it is not on a check-by-check basis. In other words, you can order nothing but drinks, but a certain percentage of overall sales have to come from food. It’s weird because as a result there are effectively no bars. Even dives and pool halls will have a full kitchen. Ours just had a law that the bar had to offer SOME food for anyone who wanted to order it. It didn’t matter what it was or the price.  I don't work in the hospitality industry, so I don't know the specifics. One of the things I heard discussed the most is that bars need to make food that people would actually want to eat and that they should actually be cutting people off that are visibly drunk, rather than just keep serving them until they blackout - which was very very common at the bar I'm thinking of. Also, the food % was 40, not alcohol. I think the only reasonable way to do it would be on a check to check basis. 40% of each closed transaction would have to be food. the bar wouldn't let you buy 10 dollars worth of booze until you had ordered 4 bucks worth of fried shit.  A bar in my college town used to have "Buy this cup at the door for $5, and then use that cup to get $0.25 well drinks/beer" for the night. Then they got told they couldn't sell for less than 50% their cheapest normal price drink. So then they came up with a drink that normally would cost $0.50. If I recall the got a good few months out of the promotion altogether before it got the kibosh. In DC, bottomless brunch (one price for both food and alcohol, typically mimosas) is very popular. Right across the river in Virginia, they have one of these laws.  Where I went to college, the local laws were that 40% of a bar's sales had to be from food. Kind of throws a wrench in all of the neat tricks people have come up within other jurisdictions.
