The presentation of the samples to the dogs was conducted via a device called Detection Dog Training System (DDTS; Kynoscience UG, Germany), which can present samples in a randomized automated manner without trainer interference. For a short video sequence, see Additional file 1. DDTS was utilized for training and testing. The device is composed of seven scent holes. Behind each hole, two tubes are leading to two metal containers. In the study, the first container enclosed the target sample and the second one carried the control sample. Only one container is presented in each sniffing hole at any given time as the pairs of containers are situated on movable slides inside the device.

Another strange tale from the arctic regions: Many years ago my dad was working on an engineering project in Kangerlussuaq - the location of Greenland's biggest airport. Same. Although I didn’t get to do much gaming during my treatments... my chemo and immunotherapy regimen required Benadryl so I slept during a good portion of my treatment time. I guess it’s just not something that I ever really thought about before, but it’s really cool to know there are so many other people out there like myself that have gone through this and bond over gaming. If I remember correctly it’s a reference to the founding myth of Rome. There’s a response where the wishes say “kill it” or something to that effect. The right answer is “thanks” it recalls the mother wolf who keeps her child safe with her mouth.
