I can’t speak for all spots where black bears exist but here in SC/NC, it’s absolutely true. I see bears on my property about once every two weeks and the second I make any noise they hightail it out. Could be a bit different near some of the bigger parks where stupid people leave food or actively throw food at bears. For a black bear, you puff up and yell, but if they are hungry enough and keep coming, you take a swing/ideally have spray if you are prepared. If you pretend to be dead you are fucked, and you aren't outrunning it. Not in the wild, but I've heard enough from people who I hike with to know better. Side effects have been a big area of improvement over the years. I work in a cancer center and hardly ever hear about vomiting any more (depends on the type of cancer). Lots of fatigue though. For everyone replying to this, my cancer and treatment aren't as serious as some people. Heck, there are kids that are getting bombarded with 5x the chemicals I am. Maybe contact your local children's hospital and see if you can drop off a Nintendo game card. I saw that in the theater and we couldn't believe how good it was, but absolutely nobody in the theater was laughing. Totally dead. One of the weirdest moviegoing experiences I've had. I remember seeing Tropic Thunder the opening weekend and it seamlessly transitioned from a regular pre-movie commercial (probably Coca-Cola) to the fake commercial for Booty Sweat. Everyone in the theater was still chatting not knowing the movie started and there was a collective WTF after Booty Sweat.
